Quick update tonight:
My best friend informed me that my lack of memory during pregnancy is referred to as "MOMMYNESIA."
There is an actual article titled "Babies Can Cause 'Momnesia'," by Liz Szabo, in USA Today (which can be Googled online.) The article talks about mental fogginess and the little slip-ups that can occur on the path of parenthood. The article goes on to say that just because women become more forgetful, it doesn't make them any less smart. Moms are compared to medical students whose brains are in overdrive, taking in a lot of new information, learning along the way, and putting that information to use with few hours of sleep. Because our brains are "getting a workout" we become more efficient, smarter and can pick things up more quickly. And the great thing about Momnesia: we become supermom to our kids and detect the slightest change in coo and ca. Some supermoms have actually saved their babies lives due to being in-tune and hyper aware of their children.
The article continues to explain that a little bit of momnesia is a good thing, because it softens/erases "traumatic" experiences, such as the delivery of Baby, so that people can move on and function. No wonder women continue to have kids. The pain they endured is erased, maybe not entirely, but enough so that they go on to bear more children.
Dads, don't worry. You're not left out. You go through changes too. While not as intense, you're in a similar loop.
Preggo or not, I suppose everyone should exercise their brains. Keep your lumpy mass in shape and give it a good workout! Stay sharp. Do cross-words or Sudoku or something. Keep on your toes and maybe you'll be nimble-minded in your golden years.
Here's to the power of the mind.
